Global GMC Design Executive Director Helen Emsley and the 2015 GMC Yukon XL at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.

Emsley, who is originally from Britain, took her new position to heart, partly because she didn’t want to known as, “the English woman who messed up the Corvette.” To that end, Emsley did something unexpected: She talked to car buyers about what they want to see in new vehicles.

The result? Lots of common sense updates to the ‘Vette and GMC vehicles, including fabric that won’t allow spilled liquids to soak through them, storage compartments big enough to hide laptops and hanging files and USB charging ports that are accessible from the rear seats.

Her favorite feature, however, is the screen in the center of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s dashboard that drops down to reveal a hidden storage cubby. Emsley loves it because it gave the car some much needed storage space as well as adding quite a bit of wow factor while still staying true to Corvette’s classic design aesthetic.
